SciFi Comes Alive on Mobile

Could we say science fiction is paving the way for the future scientist? We start by looking at the link between imagination and reality by exploring how Med Apps, AR and AI went from science fiction to running on mobile.

About This Session

Now that both Android and iOS have advanced sensors, Augmented Reality (AR) & Machine Learning (ML) frameworks shipping with their IDE we will see an explosion of life-saving medical apps, cool AR & useful ML technology.

We start by showing some profound examples of the modern smartphone as a medical device. We explore how this is having an influence on the health of humanity. Digging in deeper we dissect how these apps are built and deployed.

Then we learn what is AR and why it is considered the next big thing in tech by exploring the history and some mind-bending demos. After building a solid understanding of the what and why we start diving into the how. We will explore how to build an AR app on three different platforms: 1) iOS ARKit 2) Android ARCore 3) game engines Unity and Unreal. We will outline the advantages and disadvantages of each to help differentiate the different development processes.

Next, we explain what is Machine Learning and how it is being used on mobile with TensorFlow Lite (Android) / Core ML (iOS). We will cover how ML works, how you build ML apps on mobile and what applications are being built to solve various problems.
