Nir is a professional software engineer with expertise in Java, Node and Python and with over 14 years of experience in developing server-side applications. He likes challenges and has passion for building things, playing with new technologies and learning new things. After graduating B.Sc. in computer science he stayed another few years in university to complete M.Sc. in Mathematics specializing in Graph theory and algorithms. Then felt that the academy-life might not be for him after all, so he joined the high-tech industry. It took a bit over a year to understand that large corporations are not his cup of tea before he joined a small startup as the third developer, two years later that startup was bought and he moved to the Silicon Valley to help it continue to grow. Two years ago he joined Netflix and now is a member of Cloud Platform Automation team, helping his fellow engineers to deliver great "moments of truth" to over 60 million subscribers.

http://www.stubhub.com

I have been in the software industry for 20+ years. In the past 4 years I have worked on cloud based distributed systems for Netflix and Stubhub. Most of these systems have been associated with data delivery and management. Some of the systems I have with with are: Solr, Cassandra, Zookeeper, Hadoop and StubHubs Big Data Platform. All these systems require a different approach in design, development and access patterns. However, there are underlying patterns in each of these systems. And these patterns radically change the approach of developers and users of these systems. Without them, building and deploying distributed systems, especially at scale, becomes exceedingly problematic. I wish to share some of these design and deployment patterns as well as their programming models with the folks at SVCC.

Sebastian Meine

Sebastian Meine, Ph.D. is a Business Wealth Strategist at Be A Wealthy Expert. After receiving his Ph.D. in Mathematics, he started as a Database Developer at a global Fortune 50 company near Philadelphia. While this opportunity looked like the dream job at first, after a few years he realized that “big corporate” really wasn’t for him. So one day he quit to start his own company sqlity.net with the goal of helping clients to improve their database performance, tighten their database security and become better database developers. At first, Sebastian struggled with getting enough clients, but through determination, a lot of reading and investing into online courses on marketing and business growth, he was able to turn things around and grow his business comfortably past the six-figure barrier. While going through this learning experience, Sebastian discovered a real passion for helping other entrepreneurs to grow their business. Following that passion and building on his experience of having successfully “done it”, he founded Be A Wealthy Expert to help entrepreneurs and consultants in the IT field grow their businesses. He is helping them - to attract more clients, the right type of clients, the ones they really enjoy working with - to charge more money while increasing customer happiness - to actually live the dream that they had when they first started their business.

Brian Schulman

http://www.wizardpolice.com/

My path to engineer has been a strange one. I have a CS minor, but my degree was in Asian Studies, and I spent quite a lot of time abroad. I eventually moved out to California and enrolled in grad school, with the complete expectation of doing public policy work. My passion since childhood, however, has always been video-games. At the last moment, I withdrew from enrollment in grad school and decided to see if I could make a go of it.

I started out as an entry-level play-tester at the free to play games company, Kabam, before moving on to a technical QA Analyst role. After that, I moved on and moved up, taking QA Engineer, then Gameplay Engineer roles at KIXEYE, before moving on to a Senior Software Engineer role at FunPlus - both game companies. Now I'm at Matterport, building out some seriously futuristic tech with a team of incredibly proficient engineers.

As somebody that entered the tech industry through a non-standard channel, I am an advocate for continued, disciplined self instruction. Having benefited from so many resources online and shared across the community, it is only fair that I try to give back.

Tobiah Zarlez

http://www.tobiahz.com/

Hi, I’m Tobiah. I’m an independent game developer from the SF Bay Area. Right after college, I started a company called “Yobonja” with a couple of friends. We made dozens of games, and eventually had a hit with “Blast Monkeys”. We were the number one app on Android for 6+ months. I stopped tracking downloads in 2012 after we passed 12 million, and people still play it and its sequel today. In 2013 I started working for Microsoft as a Game Evangelist. My job is to talk to developers, teach them what I know, and help them make better games and successful companies succeed.
