Speaking Sessions

  • Building a Home Security System with Java

    5:00 PM Saturday   Room: 1401
There is nothing more rewarding than building a device and then writing embedded software for it. This session covers the nuts and bolts of building a home security system by using Java and a mixture of Oracle's Sun SPOTs and cheap embedded hardware (basic stamps/propeller). Topics covered include wireless and serial communication, sensor communication (motion/accelerometer), and remotely monitoring the system. No prior experience with embedded hardware is required. The presentation guides you from basic project setup in NetBeans to purchasing parts at an electronics parts store. This session is based on a system the speaker constructed for his home.
