The 100 Mistakes You'll Make from...
by Elaine Wherry
11:15 AM Saturday Room 1401
At your first job, you filled your shelves with obscure books to impress your colleagues. As a first-time manager, you probably tried to be a super hero to save a project but were confused when your team seemed unhappy afterwards. In senior leadership, you probably realized you needed to hire a team but regretted not spending more time expanding upon your nine LinkedIn connections. As a VP, you were probably surprised when you had to repeat a goal not once, not twice, but fifty times before anyone took notice. For six years, I chronicled my hundreds of mistakes co-founding Meebo. I initially assumed that my faults were my own but after hiring folks to fill my shoes, I realized that everyone weathers similar rites of passage as we move from individual contributor, to manager, to senior leadership. I've spent countless hours hand-illustrating the scenes for this professional tell-all with the hope of helping others avoid "I wish someone had told me that!" moments.

Elaine Wherry was Co-Founder and Chief Experience Officer (CXO) for Meebo, a consumer Internet company that enabled millions of users to chat, share, and connect with their online friends before being acquired by Google in 2012. Wherry authored Meebo's initial JavaScript framework in 2005 and went on to lead the Web, Product Management, and User Experience teams.

Crash Course: Managing Software People and Teams
by Ron Lichty
3:30 PM Saturday Room 8338
"We'd like you to manage the team now." That's about as much introduction - and training - as many of us get before our first day managing. Often preceded only by, "You're a great programmer and you've got some people skills." But while programming cred and facility with people are helpful qualifications, what do you really need to know to manage well? What makes a manager great? What are the qualities that meld teams and deliver great software? Those are among the questions that led Ron Lichty and his co-author Mickey W. Mantle to write "Managing the Unmanageable: Rules, Tools, and Insights for Managing Software People and Teams" (Addison-Wesley, September, www.ManagingTheUnmanageable.net ), now available for pre-order online. In this interactive session, we'll examine the great managers each of us has experienced, and the qualities, skills, finesse and gifts of greatness that made them stand out. We'll talk about "the rest of the job": managing up, managing out, and other aspects of being a seasoned manager that reports mostly don't see. And you'll take away a few best practices that take most managers years to discover.
