With just one day until Code Camp, things are really coming together; at last count, we have 146 presentations and 1629 registered attendees! Registration starts at 8:00 AM Saturday morning. Parking Lot #4 is paid for by our sponsors so you do not need to pay $2. All other parking at Foothill requires a fee. Follow the signs to the registration desk to pick-up your name badge and Saturday Lunch ticket.

Summer is over, and the kids are back from camp. Now, it’s time for people looking for a career tune-up in this troubled economy to go to camp. Silicon Valley Code Camp (www.siliconvalley-codecamp.com) is a free – yes, free – weekend conference October 3 and 4, 2009, for all software developers who want to share information, network, and learn new skills.

Code Camp is a new type of all-volunteer “community event” where developers learn from fellow developers. This is the fourth year for Code Camp, and its popularity continues to grow. More than 1,200 people have registered so far, and almost 150 sessions are scheduled.

The location for this Saturday-Sunday meeting remains the same: Foothill College in Los Altos, Calif. And everything is free – from registration to coffee and lunch.

Sessions at Code Camp range from informal “chalk talks” to formal presentations, and the speakers are mixed, from experts used to sharing their knowledge to people with a unique skill they’ve never shared before. Each session lasts 60 minutes.

Many presenters put their material on the Code Camp wiki to share. All of the material is community-developed by and for fellow developers. Among the 75+ topics this year are:

Ø Cloud Computing including discussions from Microsoft, Amazon and other leading vendors

Ø Application building for Google’s Android phone

Ø Windows Mobile Development

Ø iPhone Application design

Ø Security As A Service

Ø Asynchronous Web Services

Ø How to Develop with Oracle Fusion Middleware on Amazon EC2

Ø JavaScript, The Good Parts and Town meeting

Code Camp is not a Microsoft, open source, or Java event. It is a Silicon Valley developer community event. Everyone is welcome to present as long as the material fits the Code Camp guidelines. That is, it must be about code, and it can’t be a direct advertisement for a product or service.

Peter Kellner, one of the Code Camp organizers, became an independent software consultant after founding Kellner Systems and later selling it to a big insurance company. He said, “Code Camp can help you learn a new skill, meet new people, solve a problem you may be having, or just meet up with old and new friends.”

The sponsors of Code Camp range from big companies like LinkedIn, Oracle, Google, and Microsoft to smaller firms like Falafel Software in Capitola, Calif., a computer consulting and training firm, and a big thanks goes to Foothill College, of course, for hosting the event. None of the sponsors will be pushing anything at attendees, and it is not a technology exhibition, but there will be a Platinum Sponsor display area. Cloud Camp at Silicon Valley Code Camp This Year

Hello Code-Campers,

For those of you that don’t know me, I’m Dave Nielsen, co-founder and primary organizer of CloudCamp. Over the past 15 months I've worked with regional organizers around the world to put on 43 CloudCamp unconferences for the purpose of helping developers, admins and entrepreneurs explore the emerging opportunities involving Cloud Computing technologies. And as local here in Mountain View, I've participated as a presenter and volunteer at Silicon Valley Code Camp for the past 3 years. So it seemed natural to me that we might bring these two exciting events together on the same day. After discussing the idea with the SVCC crew, we decided to integrate CloudCamp within the Silicon Valley Code Camp schedule. So I am pleased to announce that CloudCamp will be hosted within Code Camp at 9:15am on Sunday.

So what happens at CloudCamp? First and foremost, CloudCamp is a real-time unconference where the audience decides what we talk about. At the end of the morning introduction "YOU" will be able to propose sessions on any topic related to Cloud Computing that you are interested in. I always propose a session for beginners called "Intro to Cloud Computing" where I promise to answer all of your Cloud Computing questions. Of course this always a challenge, and for some answers I may ask for a little help from the audience. But it is always an entertaining and educational session. Hopefully, with a little help from you, many other sessions will be proposed, such as "What is different about a Cloud Computing app?"; and "How do I scale my data in the cloud?; and "What is Hadoop?".

The following is the agenda for CloudCamp @ Code Camp. I hope you will at least join us at 9:15am Sunday for the morning session and help make CloudCamp @ Code Camp an dynamic and educational experience.

Oracle Brings “Oracle Fusion Middleware Track” to Camp

Code Camp Schedule Coming, Not Quite Ready Yet

We are just finalizing rooms at Foothill College and plan on publishing our final schedule one week from tomorrow (September 28th). We've got 139 Session to schedule covering a very broad technology space. We try very hard to keep sessions from overlapping that attendees will want to go to, but of course, with such a large overlap, we do the best we can. Once we publish our schedule, we will invite you to come back to the session list and check the radio box under the session saying you plan on attending. The reason the radio box is disabled now is because we want to make sure we know which sessions people plan on attending (when multiple sessions happen at the same time). The year, at every time slot, we expect to have at least 12 sessions running concurrently. You will only be able to attend one at each session.

This year, for the first time, we have session tracks. The idea behind tracks is that we as the organizers work with a track lead or expert in that track to identify groups of sessions that make sense to attend (possibly in a specific order with no overlap). Then, a paragraph is written to define the track theme and a special landing page is made for that track so users can see them all together along with their schedule times. Several people have asked what is the difference between tracks and the existing tag cloud. The difference is that Cloud Tags are totally made up and assigned by the session presenter. Also, all sessions are not tracked which does not reflect at all on the speaker or content. It's just an experiment for us this year. We welcome the feedback to let us know how well it works.

4th Annual Silicon Valley Code Camp Comes Again! Saturday and Sunday, October 3rd and 4th, 2009 at Foothill College

Foothill College has once again graciously offered there space to us for Silicon Valley Code Camp. Last year, we had 120 sessions and about 750 of the 1500 people who registered show up. By all accounts, it was a smashing success!

Our slogan, "By and For the Developer" continues to live strong. Everyone at code camp, whether as a presenter, attendee, organizers or volunteer are there because they want to be. It's a 100% volunteer function that works because of the generosity of the community.

So, if you can speak at code camp, please submit a session after you register. If you can help, please go to the Volunteer page in our wiki and sign up for that. If you just want to come and learn, register now and stay tuned to this page for updates.

Also, the big change this year is that from here on out you will not need to re-register every year. Just log in with your credentials from last year, go to the registration page and click the orange button saying you plan on attending. Originally, Silicon Valley Code Camp was planned as a one time deal, but this being the fourth, likely there will be a fifth. It took me a while to realize that.

The Spirit of Code Camp / Don Robbins Pinch hitting

This morning we had a mis-communication with one of our speakers and so at 9:15, our first session of the morning, we had 25 people and no speaker. On of the attendess came to registration to let me know that their was no speaker in their Web Testing Session.

Don Robbins, who is an agile wizard and based on that also a testing expert, happened to be standing next to me and said "Hey, I can give a shot at leading that session if you want". So, down to the room we walked. I introduced Don to the group, he then introduced himself to the people in the room and volunteered to lead a facilitated discusson. They all enthusiastically said yes and as I write this, Don's is leading away!

Thank you Don for stepping up!!!

Paul King's Groovy Presentation and Free Parking

Code Camp is going great!!! Quick note to let everyone know Paul King is doing his Groovy session (and 3 others) Sunday. He did not make his airline connection so he had to cancel his AM presentation today. I had to tell the people and they all asked for it to be rescheduled, so here it is.

In fact, we will be accepting Lightning Talks right up until these sessions start. We will do as many of these short 5 minute talks/demos as we have time for during each Lightning Talk session. Although you are not required to signup in advance, your doing so will help with the turnout for these sessions. To insure the largest possible audience for your talk/demo, please signup on the wiki in advance of camp. Also, the advance signups will be going first in the order that they are submitted until we run out of time. Any last minute additions will go last, time permitting. So, you can guarantee your spot to present during these sessions by signing up early.

Sessions covering .Net, Java, Ruby, Python, Security, Web Services, Architecture are just a few of the many topics covered. If you click on the URL below, it will automatically log you into your account so that you can select classes you are planning on attending. Please do this. It will help us allocate and prepare classrooms better for everyone. You will only be able to select one session for any give time slot. You can view your selections on the Sessions Overview page. This is different than what you did previously in saying you were interested in a session, now you are saying you plan on attending. You can change these choices as often as you like.

Silicon Valley Code Camp Registration Still Open / 77 Sessions in Counting

As a past registrant for our event, I wanted to make sure you don't miss our latest rendition of Silicon Valley Code Camp, as always at Foothill College on November 8th and 9th. As always, this is an all volunteer event put on by the developer community for the developer community. We do have lots of sponsors including Platinum sponsors Microsoft, Vertigo and Linked In. Our plan is to offer lunches both days as well as a barbeque Saturday night.

It's a little early too start counting the days until code camp (63 days) but I have to say I'm hugely impressed with how things are moving along. We've got 65 excellent sessions posted and more coming in almost daily. Sponsors are lining up which means we will likely have a Saturday Barbeque this year just like we did the first year. Thanks for everyone's support on this.

Since you signed up, there are likely lots of new session listed. It would be helpful if you come back to the site (this URL: http://www.siliconvalley-codecamp.com/Sessions.aspx?PKID={PKID}) and click the box below each session you are interested in. Also, if you could help us spread the word by letting your developer friends know about our event as well as put a link on your blog or companies internal blog letting as many developers know. We have a convenient link builder on our web site at the URL: http://www.siliconvalley-codecamp.com/SpreadTheWord.aspx.

And finally, we are in the starting phases of putting a contest together to build the best Silicon Valley Code Camp Mashup. The idea will be that we would like you to build an application that will let code camp attendees and non-attendees log into the code camp database and help them organize their session schedules. Years past, we've had lots of suggestions to improve our session organization tools (kind of a victim of our own success here). The plan is to expose a bunch of service API's that you can program to and let users better organize their schedules. If you are interested, please reply back and we can work together to formalize the contest.

Time for Code Camp Again! Saturday and Sunday, November 8th and 9th at Foothill College

We got a face lift but don't be confused by the new web site. It's still the same event as the past two years. Uday Gajendar, one of our speakers (and design/UI professional) designed our new look. I think you'll agree it's a major improvement. Foothill College has once again graciously offered there space to us for Silicon Valley Code Camp.

In 2006 we had 55 sessions, in 2007 we had 75 sessions, let's see if we can top that in 2008. As always, the emphasis at Code Camp will be code. Our slogan, "By and For the Developer" continues to live strong. Everyone at code camp, whether as a presenter, attendee, organizers or volunteer are there because they want to be. It's a 100% volunteer function that works because of the generosity of the community.
